TOP 10 STRONGEST FRIEREN MAGES
6 min read

The world of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End has gifted us with an extraordinary cast of mages from the legendary great mages of the mythical era to the terrifying modern-day powerhouses of the Empire's Magic Special Forces. With four confirmed great mages, 14 first-class mages, elite military units, demons, and mythical figures known simply as "legends," the power scaling in this series is truly something to behold.
This ranking covers the top 10 strongest mages we've been introduced to so far, excluding demons (who deserve their own conversation entirely). A few honorable mentions deserve recognition before we dive in: Fern, whose full power remains a mystery and could easily crack this list; Übel, a mid-battle wildcard with terrifying potential; and Wirbel, a grinding monster who's constantly improving. Keep an eye on all three.
Now, let's get into it.
#10 Neue
Neue is a top-tier member of the Empire's Magic Special Forces, and he served as our first real introduction to just how overpowered this group is. Within the Special Forces hierarchy, he ranks around third among those we've seen so far. His magic centers on gravity control and telekinesis, which he wields both offensively and defensively with frightening precision. His most impressive showing came in his fight against Übel, where he deployed a spell that stripped her of both her mana detection and her vision for a significant period of time. Fighting Neue one-on-one is not a situation most mages want to find themselves in.
#9 Denken

Denken is one of the rare few who holds the dual title of first-class mage and imperial mage — a testament to his absurd level of mastery. This veteran is a consistent highlight in every story he appears in, but his defining feat is defeating Macht, the demon widely regarded as the strongest sage of destruction and a monster powerful enough to pose a serious threat to the hero's party at the time. Denken's victory came with significant caveats: he had a prior history of being trained by Macht himself, invested enormous preparation time into the battle, and was armed with Sirie's curse-reversal magic one of the most broken spells introduced in the series. Still, he got it done. An argument could easily be made for a higher placement, but ninth is a rock-solid floor for this legend.
#8 Lernen

Lernen holds the historic distinction of being the very first first-class mage, and he's Sirie's own apprentice. We haven't seen him go all-out in combat yet, but the context clues around him are remarkable. He's one of only a handful of characters who immediately recognized that Frieren was suppressing her mana a feat Sirie compared to the Demon King suggesting Lernen's magical perception is on an extraordinary level. The great mage herself has stated that Lernen might be capable of defeating Frieren in a fight, which is a staggering statement. Despite all of this, he's considered a close second among first-class mages rather than the top, which says a lot about who sits above him.
#7 Linie

Linie is a first-class mage who hasn't had a proper introduction in the story yet, largely because she's been undercover within the Empire for the past 15 years. She's set to become a focal character in the current arc surrounding Sirie's assassination, and her re-emergence is likely to shock many readers. Her credentials are astonishing: her mentor, a fellow first-class mage, considers her the superior mage and has stated that during a practice match, Linie forced Sirie down onto one knee, something Lernen himself has never managed. The fact that she was recruited as a long-term spy makes all the more sense when you consider that level of ability. Seventh may even be underselling her, but without seeing her abilities in action, it's the right call for now.
#6 Kann One

Kann One is the vice captain of the Magic Special Forces, and if the rest of this unit is any indication, she's a terrifying prospect. The narrative framing around this group consistently positions them as the most powerful mages in the Empire, and as vice captain, she has to be near the very top of that hierarchy. We haven't yet seen her fight in full, but the current arc may very well be where she gets to show the world exactly what she's capable of.
#5 Minus the Witch

One of the four great mages, Minus is an elf shrouded in mystery and infamy. She was convicted of high treason for igniting an endless war across the southern countries — an act that speaks to the sheer scale of her power. Her story came to a head when she was brought down by a nameless warrior from a small remote country, a young figure we now recognize as Laufen's mentor and the general of the Shadow Warriors. Whether their battle ended in a true defeat or a draw remains debated, but Minus hasn't been seen since. The upcoming flashback arc in the manga is expected to finally shed light on this legendary clash, and Minus's full capabilities may surprise everyone.
#4 Flamme

Flamme is Frieren's master and Sirie's principal apprentice the human mage who, by most measures, achieved more within a single human lifespan than almost anyone in history. She fights without a staff when at her most serious, a hallmark of a truly elite-tier mage. Frieren continues to reference and respect her throughout the present-day story, and her influence on the entire Frieren world can't be overstated. She sits at the absolute pinnacle of human mage potential. The only reason she's capped here is the natural progression of magic over time the current generation, shaped by her legacy, has simply surpassed what was possible in her era. But her greatness is undeniable.
#3 Frieren

Yes, the protagonist herself lands at third, and yes, it's the correct call. Frieren is still growing she hasn't come close to showing 100% of her power but she's openly acknowledged her inferiority to Sirie in a one-on-one fight and has admitted she would have lost against the Demon King without her allies by her side. She's also noted that certain figures from the past are stronger than she is. That said, as an elf with a near-infinite lifespan, she continues to grow in ways no human mage ever could. The gap between her and the top two may close sooner than anyone expects, and a strong argument can already be made for placing her at number two in the current story.
#2 Fräse
The captain of the Empire's Magic Special Forces is a nightmare scenario, full stop. Even fifty years ago as a younger mage visiting the city of Stark she was considered so dangerous that Macht, the strongest demon of destruction, immediately wanted permission to kill her on the spot. He recognized her mana as capable of destroying the entire city. And that was fifty years ago. Her current power level, with decades more experience behind her, is almost impossible to fathom. Her subordinates alone can defeat first-class mages in close-quarters combat. Sirie herself had a precognitive vision of a battle between them and while Sirie won, she explicitly described it as a close fight. That single detail cements Faze as something approaching Sirie's equal, a statement that very few beings in this world can claim.
#1 Sirie

There was never really any other candidate for the top spot. Sirie is a great mage from the mythical era, the closest thing to a goddess in terms of raw magical power that we've encountered in this series. The one time we've seen her in a full fight, she completely dominated the strongest demon of destruction. Frieren has conceded she has no path to victory in a one-on-one with her master. Her magical reserves appear essentially limitless. And with the current arc centered on the very real possibility of her assassination, we may be about to learn far more about just how deep her power runs.
The world of Frieren continues to expand with every chapter, and the power rankings will almost certainly evolve as new characters are revealed and existing ones step into the spotlight. Keep an eye on Fern, Übel, and Wirbel because the next tier of monsters is already on its way up.
